Live Coding Sessions #11
In Live Coding Sessions: Live Instruments, we extend the live coding setup beyond the laptop, introducing instruments such as drums and guitars.
Rather than simply adding sound, these instruments become embedded in the performance. They interface with the live coding system, for example through machine learning, forming a shared system in which instrument, performer, and code continuously influence and amplify one another shaping the performance in unexpected ways.
Line-up:
Lina Bautista (ES) and Timo Hoogland will perform together as Damage Such. They use the drums and guitar combined with Timo’s programming language Mercury.
Live coder Dago Sondervan (BE) will collaborate this evening with pianist Thibaut Deryckere (BE). Together they create an interactive environment where improvisation and computer composition flow into one another.
Mark Meeuwenoord, Klasien van de Zandschulp and drummer Henk Jonkers (The Fatal Flowers, Hallo Venray!) will present an experiment involving live coding, drums and cocktail making, as an apéritif for the evening.

Line up
Dago Sondervan is a jazz drummer, live coder and guest professor at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he guides students in live coding their improvisations using Sonic Pi and TidalCycles. Active in both jazz and electronic music for many years, he is co-founder of Bot Bop, an ongoing artistic exploration of improvisation and artificial intelligence.
Thibaut Deryckere is a pianist and electronic musician from Belgium whose work moves fluidly between jazz, live electronics and club-oriented grooves. Drawing from improvisation, hip-hop, soul and electronic music, he combines acoustic performance with experimental electronic approaches.
Together they explore the meeting point of jazz, live coding and improvisation.
Timo Hoogland and Lina Bautista explore what happens when traditional instruments become part of a live coding performance. Together they improvise with guitar, drums and live code, using code to trigger synthesizers, record loops and build new layers of sound as the music unfolds in real time.
Lina Bautista is a musician, artist and developer who combines modular synths, DIY electronics and computers to create playful musical systems. She is an active member of communities including Toplap Barcelona and Axolot.cat.
Timo Hoogland is a live coder, music technologist and educator, well known in the live coding community as the creator of the live coding language Mercury. His work spans electronic music, generative audiovisual art and creative coding education.
Klasien van de Zandschulp, Mark Meeuwenoord and Henk Jonkers present an experimental performance combining live drums, machine learning and live-coded visuals.
Klasien van de Zandschulp is an interactive artist, creative director at affect lab and one of the initiators of Live Coding Sessions. Critically acclaimed for her story-based and participatory experiences, her work explores sensory design, embodiment and technology through interactive media. This performance marks her live coding debut.
Mark Meeuwenoord (aka dinggoo) is a media artist and musician whose practice spans sound, installation design, performance and artistic research. His work combines philosophical inquiry with hands-on experimentation, often exploring relationships between humans, technology and other forms of agency.
Henk Jonkers is a drummer and rock veteran whose career spans several decades of Dutch music history, including work with Hallo Venray, The Fatal Flowers, Daryll-Ann, 13 and Do the Undo.
